Why Your Content Might Be Costing You Readers (And How to Fix It)
As authors, we're masters of crafting stories, but when it comes to connecting with readers online, many of us hit a wall. You've written an amazing book, you're putting in the work, and you know readers would love your stories. So why isn't your audience growing?
Here's the uncomfortable truth: simply announcing "buy my book!" isn't enough. Readers don't follow authors just to see book promotions – they follow authors who add value to their reading life.
Let's break down how to shift from promotion to connection:
Share Your Reader Identity First, Author Identity Second
Instead of posting weekly book promotions, share your thoughts on popular books in your genre. This shows readers you're part of their community and understand what they love. Plus, you're naturally connecting with readers who already enjoy the types of books you write.
Facilitate Meaningful Discussions
Rather than creating endless promotional graphics, start discussions about favorite tropes or plot twists. Readers love talking about books they enjoy, and when you facilitate these conversations, you become a trusted voice in the community.
Make It About Them, Not Just You
While sharing your writing journey has its place, focus more on asking readers about their current reads and reading habits. This demonstrates genuine interest in their experiences and helps you understand what they truly want in books like yours.
Be Part of the Community
Stop treating social media like a billboard. Instead, join existing book discussions as a fellow reader. Authentic engagement builds real connections, which naturally lead to interest in your work.
Remember: Building an engaged audience isn't about constantly promoting your book. It's about becoming the kind of author readers want to follow – someone who adds value to their reading life and genuinely participates in the community.
Your turn: Look at your last few social media posts. Are they focused on promotion or connection? How could you adjust them to add more value to your readers' lives? If you want to see some examples, click here to see my full Instagram post.
